VisionCheck is a concept app that brings color-vision screening to everyday devices. Through guided, Ishihara-style plate tests, it helps people understand how they perceive color and surfaces possible color-vision deficiencies in a clear, approachable way.
Color-vision screening usually means a clinic visit, and at-home alternatives are inconsistent: screen calibration, lighting, and unclear scoring make results hard to trust. The design challenge was to deliver dependable, easy-to-run tests and then translate raw answers into results people can actually understand. All without ever feeling like a medical verdict.
VisionCheck guides users through calibrated plate tests under consistent conditions, with on-screen prompts that standardize how each test is taken. Responses feed a scoring engine that estimates the type and degree of any color-vision deficiency, such as deuteranopia, and presents it in plain language. Results can be saved and shared, while privacy and accuracy are treated as first-class design priorities. It is framed as a screening and awareness tool, not a diagnostic device.
A closer look
VisionCheck let our team tackle a genuinely hard measurement problem: color-vision screening depends on controlled conditions, and a phone screen is anything but controlled. The concept opens by walking the user through brightness and lighting checks so every plate is viewed under conditions the app can reason about, which is the difference between a fun quiz and a screen worth trusting.
The tests are modeled on the Ishihara plates used in clinics, where numbers hidden in colored dots are visible or invisible depending on how you perceive red and green. Responses feed a scoring engine that estimates both the type (such as deuteranopia or protanopia) and the rough severity, then explains the result in plain language rather than a raw score.
VisionCheck is a concept and a screening-and-awareness tool, not a diagnostic device, and it never replaces an eye-care professional. Designing it pushed us on the parts that matter in real health apps: honest framing of results, calibration you can trust, and private handling of something personal.
